Biography

Manish K. Gupta received his BSc (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) and MSc (Mathematics) degrees from the University of Lucknow, India in 1990 and 1992 respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics in 2000 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He has held various academic positions at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand (2000-2002); National University of Singapore, Singapore (2001); Arizona State University, USA (2002-2004); The Ohio State University, USA (2004-2005); and Queens University, Canada (2005-2006). Since 2006, he has been with the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar, India and currently works as a professor. He is a senior member of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» and a member of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Computer Society and Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Information Theory Society. In the past, he was also a member of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Communications Society (1997-2010), The International Society for Computational Biology (2004-2006), International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation and Engineering (ISNSCE) (2004-2006), and The International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) (2004). Since 2010, he has been a member of the American Mathematical Society. Gupta has served as a board member of the Indo-American Education Society, United States-India Educational Foundation (IAES-USIEF) Satellite Center (affiliated with the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs), Ahmedabad, India, from 2008 to 2015 and is a founding member of the executive council of the DA-IICT Centre for Entrepreneurship and Incubation (DCEI) since 2010 and currently serves as the chairman of the DCEI executive council. He has been selected as featured reviewer of the ACM Computing reviews February 2016 issue. His group (http://www.guptalab.org) is well known for developing open-source software products (for example, DNA Pen, 3DNA, DNA Cloud, Biospectrogram, Xtile) in the area of DNA nano-technology.

His research interests include Information processing in biology, Coding and Information Theory, Cryptology, DNA and Quantum Computing, Computational, Structural and Systems Biology, Synthetic Biology, Bioinformatics. His recent work is on DNA-based data storage.

He is a co-author of a research monograph (submitted to Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science) in quantum error correction and he is an author or coauthor of several research articles including a recent invited article in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine's special issue on coding theory, communication theory, and molecular biology. He regularly serves as a reviewer for several international journals in mathematics, communications, and biology and has delivered invited conference talks at DIMACS, AMS and various invited lectures in Universities at New Zealand, Singapore, and USA. He was an invited keynote speaker for 3 hours lectures at Com2Mac mini-workshop on Biological Coding Theory at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) University, Pohang, South Korea in June 2005.

He taught courses on Introduction to theoretical computer science, design and analysis of algorithms, theory of formal languages, computer organization & architecture, signals & systems, ordinary differential equations, applications of numerical methods, foundations of computational and systems biology, topics in bioinformatics and calculus with complex variables, discrete mathematics, natural computing, coding theory and applications, algebraic structures, elements of synthetic biology and modern topics in coding and cryptography.
