ÌýHe received his B.E. degree in 1958,Ìýthe M.E. degree in 1960, and the Ph.D. in 1963. ÌýAt about that time heÌýbecame interested in information theory and in particular inÌýerror-correcting codes. He then became a faculty member at OsakaÌýUniversity, where he taught until 1994. He was Dean of the Faculty ofÌýEngineering Science 1990-1992 at Osaka University. He was a professorÌýin the Graduate School of Information Science at the Nara Institute ofÌýScience and Technology from 1992 until 1998. From then until 2004, heÌýwas a professor on the Faculty of Information Science at HiroshimaÌýUniversity. After retiring for the third time, he continued to work
