Plenty-of-Room-at-the-Bottom

In 1959, when Richard Feynman presented his lecture "Plenty of Room at the Bottom", he outlined his vision for nanotechnology and the potential of storing information on DNA macromolecules.  In fact, he presented certain questions that were central to molecular biology at that time.   Questions like: How are proteins synthesized? What is the sequence of bases in DNA?  By the turn of the millennium, biologists had answered these questions and built systems for DNA synthesis and sequencing. Leveraging these systems, in 2012 and 2013, two laboratories demonstrated the feasibility of Feynman's dream by storing digital information on real synthetic DNA strands. These breakthroughs have garnered significant attention from researchers and a flurry of new experiments and theoretical results has ensued.

The aim of this of is to put the spotlight on the problems and solutions related to storing digital information on synthetic DNA strands. The special issue will focus on coding and information-theoretic aspects of these data storage systems. To this end, we invite submissions on one or more topics including (but not limited to) the following:
- Novel DNA synthesis methods
- Emerging DNA sequencing technologies
- Unsorted nature of DNA strands
- Constrained coding solutions for DNA-based data storage
- Sequence reconstruction problem
- Applications related to DNA-based data storage
- Machine learning approaches for DNA-based data storage
Survey papers on any topic will also be considered (potential authors are encouraged to inquire with the Guest Editors).
