As part of the Shannon Centennial Celebration, the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Information Theory Society launched last year a pilot project to create short educational videos. The objective was to showcase intriguing results from Information Theory (in a broad sense) for a large audience. The first video introducing Network Coding is now available .ÌýThere is another video on MIMO/space-time codes that is already underway. The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Information Theory Society has decided to extend the project and is now looking for volunteers to help define and create the next 3Ìý videos. ÌýIf there is a concept, idea, or method, rooted in information theory that you think the whole world should know about, this is the chance.ÌýWhat topics are of interest?Any topic related to information theory,Ìý security, data compression, networking, Ìýcoding theory, signal processing, etc., is potentially a good fit,Ìý that is, any topic where we can highlight IT society's contributions. ÌýThe presentation should be made accessible to high school students, but don’t worry, we’ll help you get there. What is the process? We have partnered with specialists who help us refine and create all aspects of the video, from extracting the essence of the chosen topic to generating a script and creating cool animations. We just need your help to shepherd the process, provide your technical perspective and make sure the description provided is accessible and correct.Note that the IT society will fund the production and have the rights for the videos, which will be used for non-profit/outreach efforts. Of course, linking that video on your website will be possible and encouraged. What commitment is expected? We want you to bring your enthusiasm and energy, and commit to meet for 45 minutes each week overÌý 8-12 weeks (estimate based on previous videos)Ìý to help define and refine the video content.ÌýHow do I submit a proposal?Send an email toÌý [email protected] ÌýÌýincluding the following items1. Suggested topic2. Rationale for the choice, including if applicable the impact the topic has had in the real world, its potential transformative aspect, etc., and why you’re excited about creating a video about it.3. AÌý committment Ìýthat if selected,Ìý you are willing to put in the requiredÌý time and be available to meet and help create the video as highlighted above. How will proposals be selected?A committee composed of Matthieu Bloch, Suhas Diggavi, Michelle Effros, Christina Fragouli will evaluate the proposals. Proposals will be ranked according to two criteria: suitability of topic for a broad audience andÌýcommitment of the proposer.Questions? Please contactÌý [email protected] Ìýfor further informationThere will be two independent rounds of selection.ÌýFirst round of selection:Ìý May 15, 2017 (one video proposal will be selected)Second round of selection: Ìý July 15, 2017 (two video proposals will be selected)Proposals not selected in the first round willÌýreceive feedback and will be given the opportunity to submit a updated version for consideration in the second round.
