The 2023 INCOMING DLR Summer PhD School was held at close to Munich, Germany on June 12th to 16th 2023. The event was organized by the Institute of Communications and Navigation of DLR, and the University of Novi Sad (UNS), Serbia, and supported by the European Union-funded project INCOMING (Innovation and excellence in massive-scale communications and information processing). The PhD school had 40 participants.
The technical program included 4 two-hours tutorials, 4 technical presentations and 11 posters. Tutorials have been held by:
- Prof. Jean-Francois Chamberland, Texas A&M, “Notions of Approximate Message Passing in Communication Systemsâ€
- Prof. Roy Yates, Rutgers University, “Age of Information in Networksâ€
- Prof. Lara Dolecek, University of California, Los Angeles, “Channel Codes for Decentralized Adversarial Networks: Applications to Blockchainsâ€
- Prof. Danijela Cabric, University of California, Los Angeles, “Deep Learning Approaches for Spatial Prediction, Spectrum Sensing, and RF Fingerprintingâ€
The four technical presentations were given by Aleksandar Minja (UNS), Francisco Lázaro Blasco (DLR), Beatriz Soret (Aalborg University) and Andrea Munari (DLR). Posters have been presented by M. J. Ferens Michalek (Aalborg University), V. Ninkovic (UNS), O. Kundacina (UNS), T. Devaja (UNS), S. Sobot (UNS), S. Sarang (UNS), F. Khodakhah (Aalborg University), S. Tinelli (DLR), J. Bariffi (DLR), A. Sauter (DLR), and A. Zahr (DLR).
The tutorials spanned topics from coding and signal processing, to age of information, from coding applied to blockchain to machine learning applied to signal processing. Technical presentations covered topics such as polar and product codes, set reconciliation, edge computing and state estimation entropy. Two dedicated poster sessions during the week concluded the technical program.
The participants enjoyed the excellent lineup of speakers and the very high-quality tutorials and technical presentations. On Tuesday June the 13th the participants had the chance to visit the German Space Operation Center (GSOC) on the DLR site. Visit to the institute included a guided tour and a walk through the bridge over the control rooms. On June the 14th all the group had the chance to have informal discussions at the social event organized on the wonderful location on the Woerthsee lake, in the nearby of DLR.
The organizers would like to acknowledge the support of the European Union Horizon 2020 program and the DLR Satellite Networks Department for organizational support and funding.
